Louisa Houchen ~ Ponyhour Equine Artist of The Month

We're delighted that Louisa Houchen, a pet portrait artist working internationally printing onto quality products from canvas to clothing and beyond, has agreed to be interviewed for Ponyhour's Equine Artist of The Month.

Thank you Louisa, first question please tell us about your work? What are you currently working on?

I draw pets from photos using a computer pen and in Adobe Photoshop. I create detailed drawings and the process is faster than drawing or painting on paper since I have the ability to undo, redo, copy and paste instantly. These are then printed onto products. I am currently working on a Labrador portrait for a cushion and some cat portraits for a variety of products including an apron, set of mugs and an A4 print.

How did you decide to become an artist?

I didn’t really decide to be an artist, I kind of fell into it! After university where I had studied Media Studies I worked in admin and retail. I didn’t know what direction to go in until one day I was looking at the greeting card section where I worked and thought I’d like to be a greeting card artist, as I saw an opportunity to create a different kind of greeting card using 3d shots of plasticised scenes. First I created “Miniature World” and then worked for several greeting card companies to develop ranges; one was called “Poptastic”. I’ve worked using various mediums and 3 years ago started my pet portrait company; I still have other projects going on in the background.

What's the best advise you've been given as an artist?

The best advice I’ve been given as a commercial artist is; make people happy. Create images they want to see.

What do you do when you are not creating?

I have a 4 year old boy called Tommy who I look after and he keeps me pretty busy; I fit in my work around him. I also enjoy running, swimming, cooking, music and social media.

What are your work and life goals for the future?

My partner and I, & little Tommy are currently applying to emigrate to Australia. It’s taking some time, but the plan is to move out to Southern Australia where I will carry on my pet portrait business over there. I’m already doing international commissions and this is something I’d like to continue to grow, as I can carry out the artwork wherever I’m based and manufacture & ship within the designated country.
